IA consultancy research on stadium lights requirements

3 key questions to answer:

  1. Will your games be televised on national or international level?
  2. Check your Class level required ( I, II, III, IV, V)
  3. How will your high mast lamp poles be positioned around the field?

• How FIFA and UEFA categorize football field lighting standards and regulations?
• Three general classifications: amateur stadium lighting, semi-professional stadium lighting and professional stadium lighting.
• Important factors that divide them are average ground lux, uniformity and whether they are televised or not.

Class I: Lowest standard class and is for training and recreation use 200 lux horizontal illumination and 0.5 uniformity. Some high school football grounds and high school sports lighting are classified in this lot.

Class II: Used in some leagues and clubs with approximately 500 lux horizontal illuminance and 0.6 uniformity. Football field lighting standard and regulation for semi-professional stadiums

Class III: National games with about 750 lux horizontal illuminance and 0.7 uniformity. This is for professional stadiums
• For national to international use, ground lux changes >1500 luxuniformity U1 at 0.6, and U2 around 0.8.

For soccer field that are equipped with professional cameras ready for frequent broadcasting of events to the public, a much higher requirements for the light fitting is necessary. We will need to specify the light frequency, harmonics, refresh rate, etc, beyond the basic power and lumens lighting requirements.

3 most common methods of lighting a soccer field

Four Corners Lighting Guidelines – 4 lamp poles are mounted at each corner of the field and having the lights and beams pointing towards the center of the field. With LED high mast lamps, a laser guided precision tool may be needed to effectively direct each light fitting towards a designated spot on the field. This is to achieve a consistent lux coverage to the ground. The poles should also be as high as possible to enable the light beams to reach the center of the field or designated spot. Generally in Singapore schools, the lamp poles are approximately 20 – 23 meters based on our experience.

Four Poles in Centre – 2 lamp poles are mounted at each side of the field and evenly spaced out beside and across on another. Each lamp pole may easily hold 15 – 20pcs of light fittings. To ensure consistent lighting coverage, the light fittings and beams are carefully positioned. This method enables a more even distribution of light levels across the pitch. It may also effectively reduce the number of light fittings as compared to the 1st method. For this method, the lamp poles are generally shorter.

Six to Eight Pole Distribution – These are a lot of poles to begin with. Usually, with high mast poles, a mechanical or automated wench and pivot system is installed for the future ease of maintenance by lowering the poles mechanically. However, it might be a most costly option compared to the 2nd method. While the poles might be shorter that results in some costs savings, the installation cost of installing the poles may add up significantly at the back. We might be looking at pole height of approximate 8 – 12 meters for this method. Nonetheless, this will surely provide a much better consistency in lux level and lighting coverage on the pitch.

A recent opportunity to advise and quote for a reputable schools’ soccer / rugby field got us reading up and relook at the lighting lux requirements. Below is a summarized of our findings to share with the lighting community and facility owners.
